Cockroaches are common pests throughout the state. While some cockroaches are considered minor pests that won’t bother you, others are major pests that will require a Hilton Head cockroach exterminator. Find out more about which kinds of cockroaches are classified as major or minor pests.
German Cockroaches: Major Pest
These light brown or tan cockroaches can measure up to 5/8 of an inch in length. They’re often found looking for food and water sources in sinks, drains, cabinets and pantries. Some also hide behind stoves and refrigerators. German cockroaches are among the most common types of roaches in the Hilton Head area.
Females can end up laying up to seven egg cases during their lifetime resulting in hundreds of offspring. Keeping your home clean and free of crumbs or other convenient food sources can prevent these pests from staying around.
Brownbanded Cockroach: Major Pest
Brownbanded cockroaches are around the same size as German cockroaches. They get their name from yellowish-brown bands on their backs. These roaches tend to be found near cabinets or close to the ceiling in corners of different rooms. Instead of carrying egg cases in their bodies as German cockroaches do, these roaches attach them to items in the home, including furniture, electronica and drawers.
American Cockroach: Major Pest
American cockroaches are large roaches that can grow to be two inches in length. They’re a reddish-brown color and are usually found in areas that provide moisture and warmth, such as storage areas and sewers. If you find these roaches in your home, such as on the first floor, a Hilton Head cockroach exterminator can get rid of them. American cockroaches can also be found in trees in the coastal Hilton Head area. Unlike German cockroaches, American cockroaches are able to fly.
Smokybrown Cockroach: Major Pest
These large cockroaches can grow up to 1.5 inches in length. They have a smoky brown coloring and are generally found in dark areas that provide them with warmth and humidity. Smokybrown cockroaches can be found in many different areas on residential properties, including wood piles, gutters, heavy vegetation and palmetto trees. When they get inside homes, they usually head to darker areas, such as attics and crawlspaces. These cockroaches can also fly.
Oriental Cockroach: Major Pest
Oriental cockroaches are major pests that homeowners often reach out to Hilton Head cockroach exterminators. These roaches can grow to be 1.25 inches long and range in color from a darker brown to black. These roaches are unable to fly even though they have wings. Oriental cockroaches tend to look for areas that are dark and cool, such as crawlspaces. They can also be found in piles of leaves and around water meter boxes.
Surinam Cockroach: Minor Pest
Surinam cockroaches are roaches that you’re unlikely to encounter in the Hilton Head area. These pests are about an inch long and have a body that is thicker and rounder than other roaches. Surinam cockroaches are typically found near the coast. Although they’re not often found inside residential buildings, they can become a serious pest when they infest lawns. If you have a problem with these roaches on your lawn, a Hilton Head cockroach exterminator can eliminate them.
Wood Cockroach: Minor Pest
Wood cockroaches are native cockroaches that can grow up to an inch long as adults. These roaches tend to be light or dark brown and have wings. If they get into homes, they typically don’t survive long. Wood cockroaches are normally found outside in piles of leaves, wood piles and mulch. Keeping your yard well-tended can discourage these roaches from coming around.
