The Life Cycle of the Formosan Subterranean Termite
There are three types of termites within this species:
- The Reproductives
- The Soldiers
- The Workers
A colony of termites is capable of producing more than 70,000 alates, or immature termites. After birth, the alates shed their wings and search for a nesting area. Once a site is found, they lay as many as 30 eggs, which hatch in just a few weeks’ time. The reproductive termites nurse the batch of eggs for up to two months. At that point, the termites are considered mature enough to nurse the next batch of eggs, and so the cycle continues.
The Damage Caused by Formosan Subterranean Termites
Although it may take a few years for a colony to be large enough to cause a lot of damage, because they can remain hidden, it’s easy for these colonies to multiply undisturbed. Termites thrive by hollowing out wood in homes, and once they reach larger numbers, they’re able to do catastrophic damage in a relatively short period of time.
