Here are a few tips to keep them from seeing a welcome sign on your home.
BIRDFEEDERS
If you simply must have a bird feeder it should be as far away from your home as possible during the spring and summer months but make sure you put it away for winter. Squirrels, rats and mice love an easy meal and your bird feeder provides it. These pests are more likely to move in with you if you keep the birdfeeder buffet going for them during winter.
FIREWOOD
Firewood or lumber should be at least 12 inches off the ground and 20 feet away from your home to avoid giving rodents a place to hide. This is a very important solution when considering how to get rid of rats and other small pests from your home.
OTHER OUTDOOR FOOD SOURCES
Fruit Trees should be regularly maintained and fruit removed once it falls from the tree. If you feed neighborhood animals or have an outdoor pet, remove the food at night. Of course your garbage lids should be closed always.
HOME ENTRANCES
Install door sweeps on exterior doors if you can see a gap. Repair damaged screens, especially around enclosed patios and back decks. A mouse can fit in an opening that is ¼ of an inch! So yes, that tiny gap can easily become their front door. Keep your garage door closed.
